Every Home Needs a Harvey!

Now I've never really believed in the power of telly advertising. Most of them just get on my nerves with their flying cars, stupid mobile phone ads and washing powders that don't get your clothes any whiter or cleaner than the cheapest stuff on the market.
They interrupt the programmes but at least you can go for a loo break or make a cuppa!  One thing the BBC has in its favour is no adverts. Well only the ones advertising their programmes!

I can remember the first time I ever saw a TV advert, it was in a Jerry Lewis film. Yes I'm ancient and remember the golden time when we had no adverts on telly. It made me laugh as I'd never seen anything like it. There was this old woman watching a huge colour telly and as each product advert came onto the screen she started using it. As I said I laughed, it was so stupid. The only thing I can remember about the products was one turned her hair bright pink. No wonder I don't believe in TV ads.

I had started to write a posting on telly adverts when they started to show the new one about Harvey last week which shows the power of TV advertising. My grandchildren were falling about laughing at it just like I did with the Jerry Lewis film.

Maybe I should rethink my ideas a bit. I need a Harvey!

  2. Awww that's great!

I was just watching the Ikea advert with all the cats on it. Have you seen that one?

  3. Oh, man, that was priceless. I would call my wife in here to watch it right now, but she's doing something that I don't want to do, and she would probably ask me to help her if I allow my presence to be discovered.

  4. Thanks for the laugh. I loved this! We have a couple of ads that make me laugh, but most are like you said...just annoying.

  5. The mind boggles Snowbrush! I'm not going to ask what she's doing.

  6. Cool Joe- Yes, I like that one too. At first I wondered what it was about then I recognised the warehouse storage.

I also like the Compare the Meerkat.com one. Think the animals are capturing the advertising market/meerkat!

  7. Funny one. I mute the TV or leave the room when they come on, I HATE adverts. When others talk about them, I usually don't know anything about them.

  8. I have a Harvey, my husband. I think the dog is a lot cuter, but my Harvey can out do him around the house:-)

  9. I've sent this video to my entire family.

    Thanks for the great chuckle.

  10. Here in the U.S., commercials now occupy 20 minutes of a 60 minute program. I no longer even watch commercial television. Instead, I watch what's called public television (PBS) and I listen to public radio (NPR). No commercials and far superior programming.

  11. Marjorie - Your Harvey sounds a good asset to any home.

Rudee - Hope your family enjoy it. Have to say I wouldn't have been able to resist having that dog.

Snowbrush - Your Public service must be like our BBC TV & radio programmes. They do produce the most varied programmes and excellent drama plus no ads! If you're watching an hour long drama programme, that's exactly what you get. However you have to make sure you fit in your coffee & loo breaks before a film starts!

  13. Winifred, part of what PBS and NPR broadcast comes directly from the BBC. We get drams, sitcoms, and, of course, the news.

  14. Priceless - I wonder if he cooks the dinner!

  15. I didn't dare watch the video as my computer is on its last legs and I am very careful what I ask of it. When I get home and have all my pictures from this trip properly backed up, I will watch it. In the meantime I agree with you that I don't like TV ads. Although there are some cute ones during the SuperBowl here in the US.

  16. No adverts on BBC? That would be a dream come true. Plus you probably don't have weather alerts that interrupt your programing every few minutes. Now about Harvey, I think I have a Harvey and her name is Slim and while she doesn't do all those things, I'm just sure she could if she had to. Meanwhile she's great at herding goats and chickens:)

  17. Snowbrush - Hope you get the best of the Beeb! They have some excellent drama. I love Merlin, the new series has just started here. Also love New Tricks, 3 older codgers (ex policemen) solving old cases, Spooks is good but sometimes very gruesome. My current favourite is Larkrise to Candleford, can't wait for the new series. Not much good new comedy other than Gavin & Stacy.

Grannie Annie - No we don't get weather reports interrupting programmes. That would be horrendous. Have to say I do prefer the Beeb with no ads but sometimes there's a lot of sport on which I'm not too keen on. They do cover sport very well though especially the Formula 1 racing. When ITV had it the interruptions for ads were ridiculous.

  18. Ha, I saw what Granny Annie wrote about weather alerts, and I figured she probably lived in the Midwestern U.S. or the Southern U.S. I checked, and she's in Oklahoma. They get lots of thunderstorms and tornadoes. In fact, Oklahoma might very well lead the nation in both, that is if Kansas doesn't beat them out of first place. Here in Oregon, Granny, we don't get weather alerts, but we are waiting for the Big One to shake everything to pieces.

Larkwise to Candleford just started coming on here, but I've never watched it because it looks suspiciously like a series.

  19. Snowbrush - This is getting like Facebook conversation! When you say the big one do you mean an earthquake?

Yes Larkrise is a series. I think there have been three so far. I'm surprised my husband likes it but he never misses it. The characters are great, a wide range of young and old and it's sad but also funny.

  20. Yes, an earthquake. When I moved here, one of the things I was happy to leave behind in the American South was thunderstorms and earthquakes. Like Granny said, the weather alerts come on a lot sometimes, but there's really not much you can do (no one in Mississippi had storm cellars), so there was really nothing one could do.

At the time I came here in '86, Oregon was considered free of natural disasters with the exception of forest fires and localized floods. Then, geologists discovered that we get hell's own earthquake every 300-400 years, and the last one was in the year 1700. They even know the exact date because Japan got a tsunami from it and, being literate, they recorded the event.

  21. Snowbrush - I'm feeling so guilty about moaning when it rains. Can't imagine what' it's like living with that, hurricanes and tornadoes.

My only experience of an earthquake was in Barcelona of all places. I was sitting in a rocking chair which suddenly started to move & I thought I was having a dizzy turn. That was better than my husband who was unfortunately sitting on the loo when the earth moved!

  22. Believe me, I moan when it rains, so no need to feel badly. Here, it rains--more often drizzles--part of the fall, all of the winter, and most of the spring. Then, in summer, it stops totally, and everything turns brown.
