Yes we should have been on the way to the North Cape of Norway & the Land of the Midnight Sun on a cruise today but thanks to the virus we aren't. It was our 50th wedding anniversary last September but due to numerous health problems we didn't make the cruise we fancied in September so we booked to go to Norway this year.

We were looking forward to the cruise as I haven't been to Norway for over fifty years and I've never been that far North in Norway. Nordkapp or the North Cape as we know it is the most northerly part of Europe & is the point where the Norwegian Sea meets the Barents Sea and I have to admit I was looking forward to it.

We're lucky living so far north in England with our lovely long light nights in summer, well when the weather's good it's light until after 10.30pm & the sun starts coming up at about 2.30am. We went for a walk tonight at about 9.15pm & the sun was going down & was brilliant but not the midnight sun.

Never mind maybe next year but it's hard to tell what's going to happen with cruising or travel abroad anywhere. Maybe it will be Scotland, it's about time I went back there.

  2. wow, gorgeous photo. Happy 50th ..even though it's a little late. My 50th comes up in May next year but we've been together 53 years counting dating. Wow what a long time to live with the same person. Hope you can make that trip. And you have such long days and early sunrises. Amazing. Good to see a post from you.

    1. Thank you. Yes it's a long time but looking back it seems to have flown. May will be here before you know it!

  5. Yes I've had to cancel trips during lockdown, one to the States and one to the South of France. My partner runs a large travel company so it's a very stressful time, but Europe is opening up again which is good but I can't see cruises happening for a while. We've booked a flight to the States in November, to be honest I wouldn't want to travel on a plane at the moment.

    1. That's a shame but as long as you're all OK that's the main thing. It must be stressful being in the travel industry at the moment, I hope things improve soon for you both.
I don't think we'll be cruising for at least a year. If we do, it will be on one of the small ships like the ones Oceania have.
I used to be a tour manager for a rail holiday company and I really love travelling by train so I might think about that for a holiday next year. I always feel less cramped on a train and it's great being able to enjoy the scenery on the journey.
Like you I don't fancy being on a plane at the moment in fact I'm not sure I fancy going on a plane again. By November things will have hopefully improved so you'll feel better about getting away.

  6. I'm so sorry that you've missed your long-looked-forward-to Norwegian trip. I hope it happens next year. I know it is hard to make plans, but I can't help feeling that with all the scientists and top brains working on this they will have found some way of controlling this disease effectively by the time another year has gone by. I have never been to Norway but the coastline always looks remarkable from the photos, and I recently saw a TV programme set there which was quite incredible!

  7. I'm so sorry that you missed your trip.

I can understand liking the long days of summer, but how do you survive the short days of winter? I'm just below the 45th parallel, yet they sure get me down.

My wife and I will celebrate our 49th anniversary this year.

  8. That's great Snow, hope you both have a lovely day. It's brilliant that you've reached 49, not long to go now to the golden 50 it's quite an achievement these days.

Yes in December we get only about about 7 & a half hours of daylight but to be honest it doesn't bother me too much. I'm not an early riser so it's daylight by the time I get up! Also I'm not an outdoor person so the dark nights don't bother me too much. Global warming musy be kicking in (despite what Herr Trump says) as I remember heavy snows when I was little & having to dig ourselves out to get onto the road but we haven't had a heavy snowfall for about 15 years now. Plus we had a record summer this year, weeks of lovely long sunny days although I'm not someone who likes being in the sun but looking at it makes you feel good. Being able to go for an evening walk is lovely too. We've just had our flu jabs, got to minimise the risks who knows what will happen about the Covid vaccine, hope they are successful. Glad you are surviving this nasty virus, take care.
