Holocaust Memorial Day 27 January

Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated internationally on 27th January each year. This date was chosen as it's the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp – Auschwitz-Birkenau.

It's a day to remember the victims and the survivors of the Nazi death camps and also Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and currently Darfur.

We can pause and reflect on what can happen when racism, prejudice and exclusionary behaviour are left unchecked. It's an issue for all humanity and we should recognise that it could happen again anywhere and at any time, unless we ensure that our society opposes discrimination, persecution and racism.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

Edmund Burke

  1. Winfred,

It would wonderful if the world was at peace and if we all loved and cared for each other. Can you remember in history when there were no wars, discrimination, hate, prejudice, etc.?

I truthfully think it is an impossible wish or dream but I suppose we should always have hope.

We shall remember all the atrocities suffered by man. We hope all the victims are at peace.

  2. We should have a day of remembrance for lives lost so tragically. I'm hopeful for a day when atrocities like those endured by Holocaust victims are a thing of the past.

  3. We all hope atrocities like the Holocaust will never be repeated but, I think, that they are still being repeated, although on a smaller scale in some countries.

  4. We should try to live in peace - there are enough horrific natural disasters for us to deal with without those made by man. Ax

  5. I did not know there was a Holocaust Memorial Day. I am glad that a time is set aside to celebrate the opening of gates. A bank customer of mine for twenty years decided one day to roll up her sleeve and show me her concentration camp number. I knew that was the day she truly called me friend and we cried together.

  6. I've always loved that quote. It is so true.

We visited Dacau while in Gernmany eleven years ago. I was totally overwhelmed by the evil men can visit on one another. Sometimes in the name of God.

    Thanks for this post.

  9. Those were horrible days. Racial Islam seems determined to repeat history. I wonder if that is how the end will happen?
